Macrobetix – ”An american proto-feminist classic following the life of Wanda. Leaving her children to the care of her husband naive Wanda struggles along in life. After losing her job at a factory and a regrettable one night stand she stumbles into a relationship of sorts with a criminal who is killed during a failed bank robbery. She is then nearly sexually assaulted by a solider before being taken in by a bunch of revellers.
The story shows Wanda as a woman unsure of herself and her identity, constantly looking to please and be whoever people want her to be. With little to no options in life she is forced into situations she feels she has no control over. The documentary style of the film adds to the sense of realism as you’re drawn into her life in a way that feels genuine. A type of film making and realistic portrayal of a woman detached from societal expectations got director and star Barbara Loden the Critics’ Prize at the Venice Film Festival 1970 and is why the film still continues to be influential to this day.”
