Macrobetix – ”After the Father denounces the church and plantation in which they live, the family sets out to find a new home In the wilderness of Puritan, New England. Immediately things take a sinister turn and the family’s demonic journey into witchcraft, torment and corruption only escalate in this bone chilling masterpiece from Robert Eggers.
The cast are phenomenal throughout with gripping performances that bring this disturbing story to life. Ralph Ineson’s scene, in which he pleads to God on his knees is especially memorable. Reflecting the sheer desperation and torment of the character in a strikingly genuine way. Harvey Scrimshaw’s possession scene is truly intense. Anya Taylor-Joy & Kate Dickie’s final scene brings alive the tensions between their characters as mother and daughter. A powerful and highly emotionally charged climax to the film.
Truly horrifying, yet fantastic and gripping. A must for any fan of horror and Robert Eggers.”
Paul – “Firstly the film’s historical setting and dialogue added a lot of authenticity. But it’s very vague on so many little bits and doesn’t offer a clear-cut, definitive explanation for the events that unfold, it’s frustrating. Also the family’s reactions in some cases are untrue and quite frankly funny, but I still enjoyed it.”
