Macrobetix – ”A feminist avant-garde film about questioning social norms, focusing mainly on consumerism, the patriarchy & socially pressured behaviours of women.
The film frequently shifts between black-and-white and colour, uses surrealist effects, collage-like visuals and abrupt cuts to create a disorienting and chaotic atmosphere. The Maries’ movements are often accompanied by creaking sounds, likening them to dolls or puppets, a metaphor for how society views and controls women.
The Maries’ destructive and “spoiled” behavior is a rebellion against a patriarchal society that expects women to be docile and subservient. Their actions are a parody of societal expectations, taking the “giggling bimbo” stereotype to an absurd and destructive extreme.
The Maries are also often seen consuming food in a glutenous and wasteful manner, this often includes apples. The act of eating the apples represents their conscious decision to abandon societal rules and embrace “sin” and “knowledge” in its most anarchic form. It’s also a critique of food waste and consumption within the world of consumerism.
A playful and provocative film that challenges the viewers ideals about women and their supposed roles and behaviours.”
